Football is back, but the NFL entered Week 1 with plenty of players already appearing on injury reports. And that raises an important question for athletes at every level: If professional teams invest millions into keeping athletes healthy, what can youth sports learn from what they’re doing? The NFL itself identifies training camp as the period with the highest injury rate and has increasingly used injury, workload, equipment and performance data to change how teams prepare players for the season.  

In today’s Featured Story, we’re looking at the injuries surrounding the start of the NFL season, what professional organizations are doing to manage workload and readiness, and what youth athletes can take from it right now. The goal isn’t to pretend injuries can all be prevented. It’s to better prepare athletes for the forces and demands their sport will place on them.

In Fueling Performance, we’re tackling a problem many families don’t notice: the athlete who ate lunch at noon and then tries to train hard at 6 PM without adequately fueling in between. We’ll break down the 3–6 PM fueling gap and how to better time food around training.

Parent Playbook asks a different question about development: Are you tracking the wrong progress? Game statistics tell us what happened. Performance data can help us understand whether the athlete underneath those results is actually changing.

What professional football’s preseason injuries can teach youth athletes about preparing their bodies for the season.

The NFL season is finally here.

But before most teams played their first meaningful snap, plenty of players were already dealing with injuries.

During training camp and the preseason, notable players around the league dealt with knee, ankle, hamstring, calf, groin and other injuries. Houston quarterback Graham Mertz tore his ACL. Minnesota’s Jamal Adams suffered a season-ending injury. Jets running back Breece Hall dealt with a groin injury. Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson missed the opener because of an ankle injury suffered in practice. Raiders tight end Brock Bowers underwent a procedure after injuring his knee during camp.  

And these are professional athletes with access to some of the best medical staffs, strength coaches, athletic trainers, nutritionists, recovery technology and sports-science resources in the world.

So what’s going on?

Sports are demanding. Injuries cannot simply be eliminated.

Some injuries happen because another player lands on an ankle. Some happen during contact. Others involve muscles, tendons or ligaments under tremendous forces.

There is no workout, mobility routine or piece of technology that can make an athlete injury-proof.

But that doesn’t mean preparation doesn’t matter.

It means we should understand what professional organizations are actually trying to do.

The NFL Isn’t Just Asking, “Are You in Shape?”

Modern professional teams increasingly manage workload, recovery and readiness, rather than assuming every healthy athlete should simply do the maximum amount of work available.

That can mean monitoring practice participation, gradually increasing exposure after an injury, managing repetitions and paying attention to how athletes respond to training. Detroit, for example, deliberately limited an offensive lineman’s workload when he returned to padded practice following a soft-tissue injury rather than immediately giving him a full workload.  

The 49ers are doing something similar with players returning from major injuries. Nick Bosa is returning from ACL reconstruction and George Kittle from an Achilles tear, with their practice exposure and potential game workloads being managed as they return.  

Even sleep and circadian rhythm are being treated as performance variables. For tonight’s 49ers-Rams game in Australia, the teams took dramatically different approaches to the 17-hour time difference. San Francisco arrived early to acclimate and used sleep expertise in its preparation, while Los Angeles tested a strategy designed around maintaining its players’ U.S. body clocks and minimizing disruption.  

That’s sports science being applied to a very practical question:

What does this athlete need in order to be prepared to perform?

Youth Athletes Should Learn From That

Now compare that with youth sports.

An athlete may practice with their school team, train with a club team, attend a private lesson, participate in performance training and play several games over a weekend.

Each coach sees their piece.

The athlete’s body experiences all of it.

That’s why parents and coaches should think beyond simply counting games or practices.

How much high-intensity work has the athlete accumulated? How many consecutive days have they trained? Are they sleeping enough? Are they eating enough? Have they suddenly increased their workload? Are they recovering between competitions? Are they strong enough to tolerate the forces their sport repeatedly places on them?

And perhaps most importantly:

Has their body actually been prepared for what we’re asking it to do?

Playing more isn’t necessarily preparation for playing more.

Athletes need progressive exposure to sprinting, jumping, landing, decelerating, changing direction, strength training and the specific demands of their sport.

The objective isn’t to avoid stress.

The objective is to build an athlete capable of handling it.

You Can’t Prevent Every Injury

That’s an important distinction.

No coach should promise that a training program will “prevent injuries.”

We can’t.

What we can do is develop physical qualities that help athletes tolerate the demands of sport, manage training intelligently, identify potential limitations, progressively expose athletes to appropriate workloads and take recovery seriously.

The NFL’s injury reports this week are actually a useful reminder of just how demanding sport can be.

If athletes with world-class resources can get hurt, our response in youth sports shouldn’t be fear.

It should be better preparation.

Don’t wait until the season starts to start building the body required for the season.

Prepare for the forces before the forces arrive.

TEST. MEASURE. TRAIN. REPEAT.

FUELING PERFORMANCE

Your Athlete Ate Before Practice. So Why Did They Still Run Out of Energy?

Your athlete ate lunch at school.

Practice is at 6:00 PM.

By 6:45 they’re dragging, losing focus and telling you they’re tired.

“But you ate today.”

Technically, yes. But when?

For many youth athletes, the problem isn’t simply what they’re eating. It’s that their nutrition doesn’t match when they’re being asked to perform.

A lunch eaten around noon may not be enough to fuel a demanding evening practice.

Think of nutrition as a timeline.

3–4 HOURS BEFORE TRAINING: If possible, eat a normal meal built around carbohydrates + protein + produce + fluids.

Think rice and chicken, a turkey sandwich with fruit and yogurt, or pasta with lean protein.

30–90 MINUTES BEFORE: If it’s been several hours since the last meal, top off with something smaller and easy to digest.

Think banana + Greek yogurt, fruit + pretzels, applesauce + string cheese, a granola bar + milk, or half a turkey sandwich.

The goal isn’t to stuff the athlete immediately before practice. It’s to make sure they don’t arrive running on fumes.

Watch the 3–6 PM Gap

This may be one of the biggest nutrition problems for school-age athletes.

Consider:

12:00 PM — Lunch
3:00 PM — School ends
5:30–7:00 PM — Practice
7:30 PM — Dinner

Without an intentional after-school snack, that athlete may begin practice five or six hours after their last real meal.

Then everyone wonders why their energy disappears halfway through training.

For athletes who practice after school, make an after-school performance snack part of the routine, not something they remember occasionally.

And What About During Practice?

For many shorter practices, water is perfectly adequate when the athlete arrives hydrated and properly fueled.

Long practices, tournaments, multiple games, hot environments and athletes who sweat heavily can create different needs, where carbohydrates and electrolytes may become useful.

A sports drink isn’t automatically good or bad.

It has a job. Make sure the situation actually requires it.

After Training

Nutrition now has another job:

Rehydrate. Replenish energy. Provide protein for recovery.

That doesn’t require an expensive “recovery system.”

Chocolate milk, yogurt and fruit, eggs and toast, a sandwich, or a normal balanced dinner can all work.

The important part is recognizing that nutrition doesn’t begin five minutes before practice or end when practice does.

Instead of only asking:

“What should my athlete eat?”

Ask:

“What does my athlete need to do today, and when will they need the energy to do it?”

Then fuel accordingly.

Are You Tracking the Wrong Progress?

Ask a baseball parent how their athlete is doing and you’ll probably hear a batting average. A pitcher parent might tell you their ERA. In other sports it might be goals, touchdowns, points, wins or playing time.

Those numbers matter. Sports are competitive, and ultimately athletes train so they can perform better when the game counts.

But there’s an important distinction parents should understand:

Game statistics measure outcomes. Performance data helps us measure development.

Imagine a hitter who squares up a ball at 92 MPH directly at the shortstop. They’re out.

Next at-bat, they hit a 61 MPH blooper that falls between three defenders. They’re on first.

The box score rewards the second swing.

But which swing would you rather have your athlete learn to produce consistently?

That’s one of the limitations of evaluating development entirely through game results. Outcomes are influenced by competition, teammates, opponents, opportunity, officiating and sometimes plain old luck.

Performance data lets us look underneath the outcome.

If a hitter’s exit velocity and bat speed are increasing, we have evidence that their ability to produce hard contact is developing. If a pitcher’s velocity is increasing while their strike percentage improves, something meaningful may be changing even before it dramatically affects their ERA.

And the same concept extends beyond baseball.

An athlete may be improving their first-step acceleration, change-of-direction ability, jump performance, relative power, strength, mobility or ability to produce and absorb force. Those changes may not immediately appear on a scoreboard, but they’re building the physical capabilities the athlete takes onto the field.

That’s why establishing a baseline matters.

Without knowing where an athlete started, it’s difficult to objectively determine how much they’ve changed.

Testing gives us that starting point.

Training gives us an intervention.

Retesting tells us whether the athlete adapted.

And when we track multiple areas of performance, we can begin to understand something even more valuable: why an athlete may be improving—or what might still be limiting them.

That’s the philosophy behind how we assess athletes at APEX. The objective isn’t to collect numbers because technology makes it possible. It’s to turn those numbers into useful information that helps coaches, athletes and parents make better developmental decisions.

The scoreboard will always matter.

Batting average will matter. ERA will matter. Goals and touchdowns will matter.

But those are often the result of development, not the measurement of development itself.

So when you’re trying to determine whether your athlete is getting better, don’t only ask:

“How are they performing?”

Ask another question too:

“What can they do today that they couldn’t do three months ago?”

Because sometimes an athlete is making significant progress before the box score knows it.

Need something simple before a game or hard training session?

Meet the APEX Titan Banana.

Take a banana and add a pinch of salt, a little cinnamon and a drizzle of honey. Eat it roughly 30–60 minutes before activity, assuming that timing sits well with your stomach.

Simple? Absolutely.

But there’s some logic behind it.
